Arts & Culture

Khulumani has produced four theatre productions thus far. They have been developed in such a way that opportunities are provided to the audiences to tell their own stories and to have these stories acknowledged in the process. This has been such a powerful tool for healing and reconciliation. Khulumani is also involved from time to time as partner in other productions such as the film "Zulu Love Letter" (right).

Advocacy and Lobbying Post-TRC

The TRC failed to address the consequences of political violence and human rights violations for many people. 90% of Khulumani's members who are gross human rights survivors, were not included in the processes of the TRC. All of these individuals turn to Khulumani Support Group for assistance to appeal and to access support from government. Government continues to hold an obligation towards traumatised citizens in the long-term goal of achieving the restoration of their dignity and reconciliation.Khulumani is pursuing these issues with government, specifically the TRC Unit in the Department of Justuce, to facilitate some longer-term arrangement to address the needs of victims post-TRC.

Disappearances and exhumations

The TRC received more than 1500 victim statements concerning persons who went missing or who disappeared after being forcibly abducted during the period 1960 - 1994. The vast majority of these cases have not been investigated or resolved. Many distraught family members are seeking closure on these matters. Khulumani works with other stakeholders to advance investigations to find out what really happened to disappeared loved-ones so that the process of closure can begin. Khulumani organised the very first commemoration of International Day of the Disappeared in August 2004 and has done so annually ever since. Khulumani convenes support groups of the families of the disappeared such as in Mamelodi and the East Rand.

Memorialisation

Apartheid MuseumWe don't want to forget those who died, those who were tortured or those who disappeared. The only way to truly respect our heroes, both the dead and the living, is by creating memorials. Our members are beginning to document and professionally display their memorials at places like the Apartheid Museum. Such projects contribute to the healing of all those involved in both the production and the witnessing of such a powerful memorialisation of the atrocities they endured. These kind of activities enable a country to develop a common and shared memory and history, as people learn about each other's stories, thereby creating a true sense of unity and reconciliation.

Needs Assessment Survey

In the post -TRC dispensation Khulumani shifted its focus from responding to the requirements of the TRC to addressing the felt needs of its members. The Needs Assessment Surveys provide the organisation with sound empirical data and exceptionally detailed and valuable information about the life circumstances of Khulumani's members. The information derived from these needs assessment forms is utilized for designing appropriate projects that are tailored to meet the needs of the members, as well as for documentation of a collective history of all those involved in the apartheid-era struggle.

Reconciliation Projects

Khulumani membership, especially in regions that never received much support from the TRC, have expressed the need to engage in a reconciliation processes between political factions within their communities. Some processes have already been facilitated through Khulumani Support Group such as that on the East Rand and that in the Natal Midlands where sentenced prisoners were accompanied back to the communities where they had caused harm, including killings, so that they could explain to these communities what they had done and could ask forgiveness for their actions, before being returned to prison.

Provincial Capacity Building

Khulumani's capacity is found within its 58 000 membership. The local and regional groups have each elected a provincial coordinator and a secretary to represent them on the national steering committee which meets bi annually. At these committee meetings we focus on victim empowerment programmes and capacity building. The organisation's National Steering Committee is the ideal forum for sharing information, for training provincial representatives and for deepening democratic practices. Capacity-building based on business-skills training is especially vital for them so that they can work together with others in their impoverished areas, to uplift the economic status of themselves and their families by utilising their skills.
