Tutu unhappy with reparation pay out

Bishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, the former chairperson of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), says he is disappointed at the amount of reparation given to victims of the apartheid government.

Bishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, the former chairperson of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), says he is disappointed at the amount of reparation given to victims of the apartheid government.

South Africa is today marking the tenth anniversary of the first sitting of the TRC.

Speaking from his Cape Town home, Tutu says the TRC had recommended that compensation of R100 000 to be paid to victims of the apartheid regime, but government has now settled on a lower figure of R30 000. Tutu also lamented the failure of white political leaders to embrace the work of the commission.
