Last night Khulumani's Gauteng facilitator, Nomarussia Bonase attended the SEED (Supporting Entrepreneurs in Sustainable Development) Award Ceremony in Nairobi where the SEED Winners for 2013 were announced.

The 2013 SEED International Jury selected Khulumani as a winner of the 2013 SEED Awards out of 72 shortlisted initiatives.

Khulumani received a SEED award in the African category for its initiative “Khulumani Gogos Going Green”.

“Khulumani Gogos Going Green” is a small enterprise initiated by elderly women living in rural areas who form savings clubs to enable them to gain access to solar lighting and electricity.

It supports successful small enterprise development and management in the solar energy sector, while reducing women's vulnerability to sexual assault and facilitating access to communication technology for rural communities.

The SEED Awards for Entrepreneurs in Sustainable Development is an annual awards scheme designed to find the most promising, innovative and locally led start-up social and environmental entrepreneurs in countries with developing and emerging economies. An international jury of experts selects enterprises which have the potential to make real improvements in poverty eradication and environmental sustainability while contributing to a greener economy.

The SEED Award will provide support to “Khulumani Gogos Going Green” by:

  • increasing its exposure nationally, regionally and internationally through global media coverage, the SEED Symposium and the International Awards Ceremony in Kenya
  • strengthening the enterprise through capacity building and financial support
  • assisting with marketing and access to other networking opportunities, and
  • highlighting and profiling its success.
"The Award is a recognition of your particular achievements in innovation and entrepreneurship so far, your promising efforts to promote economic growth, social development and environmental protection in South Africa, and not least the potential of your partnership to inspire others."
- Helen K Marquard, Executive Director: SEED Initiative
