  • Venue: Great Desmond Tutu Hall, VUT Main Campus
  • Address: Andries Potgieter Boulevard, Vanderbijlpark

    Guest Speaker: Professor Hlengiwe Mkhize

The life and contributions of Duma Joshua Kumalo, best-known as one of South Africa's "Sharpeville Six" and a founding staff member of Khulumani Support Group, will be commemorated in an inaugural lecture to be held at the Vaal University of Technology on 29 August 2016.

The “Sharpeville Six” were falsely accused, in 1984, of killing a local councillor and were sentenced to death. Duma and his comrades eventually left jail in June 1991.

Duma’s lifelong wish to see his name cleared was never granted by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, before which he appeared in 1996.

But Duma resolved to struggle for justice for himself and for all whose issues had not been resolved by the TRC.

Duma mobilised people across the country to SPEAK OUT! and to FIND YOUR VOICE!

Duma’s humanity, humour and warmth were legendary, No-one who ever met him, could forget him. He was an inspiration to thousands and was supported throughout by his wife Betty and their son, Jogi and Lucky, his first son.
