Letter to the President urging the establishment of an Office on Missing Persons in Sri Lanka

Your Excellency President Maithripala Sirisena and Colleagues,

I am writing on behalf of the victims' movement in South Africa. Khulumani Support Group, to extend our appreciation of the progress made in developing legislation to allow for the setting up of an Office on Missing Persons in Sri Lanka.
We note that the Sri Lankan government adopted and domesticated the International Convention to Protect All Persons from Enforced Disappearances. This is an advance that we in South Africa have yet to achieve.
We note that having made a great deal of progress, there is now growing concern amongst affected families in Sri Lanka about the delays in establishing the OMP. We trust that this  will soon be addressed as a long-needed mechanism to secure the right to the truth for affected families in Sri Lanka.

We will follow developments with interest and concern.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Marjorie Jobson

Khulumani Calls for the Truth about the Murder of Ashley Kriel 30 Years after His Death, 9 July 2017

More than one year after the announcement by the Hawks in March 2016 of the re-opening of the investigation into the killing of Ashley Kriel by apartheid security agents in his safe house in Hazendal, Athlone in Cape Town on 9 July 1987, on the basis of new evidence strongly suggesting that Kriel was murdered, came to light. Forensic scientist Dr David Klatzow has explained that Kriel was shot from behind, “from a distance”, while his wrists were handcuffed behind his back. The fact that Captain Jeffrey Benzien who was involved in the death of Kriel, was found to have committed perjury at the inquest into Kriel’s death, strengthened the suspicions of Kriel’s family that he was murdered.

Khulumani calls on all social justice activists to sign the Ilitha Labantu OneTooMany pledge

This call out for all South Africans concerned about the abduction, rape and killing of women and girls in South Africa to sign the One-Too-Many pledge developed by Ilitha Labantu to start a National Campaign to Stop the Rape and Brutal Killing of Women and Girls.

This is a human rights issue. It is everyone’s problem. It is not isolated. It is never going to be acceptable. It has to change. It is your duty and our duty to change it.

#StopTheRapeAndBrutalKillingOfOurWomenAndGirls

Here is the pledge:

#I PLEDGE to stop the abduction, rape and killing of women and girls in our communities. Together we demand bold political leadership to prevent rape and brutal killing, to protect civilians and rape survivors, and call for justice for all including effective prosecution of those responsible.

Reunite the Kubeka Family Campaign

Help the Kubeka family reunite.

Forty years after their oldest brother disappeared during the Apartheid era, three siblings finally have the chance to find out what happened to their brother, meet their brother's daughter, and visit their brother's grave.

Any amount that you can donate will go directly toward the plane tickets and travel expenses of the Kubeka family.  Help this family find the peace and closure they deserve.

Please visit https://www.backabuddy.co.za/reunite-the-kubeka-family-campaign to donate or find out more information.
