Victims march against TRC process

Victims of human rights abuses during the apartheid era marched on 15 March 2000 to show their dissatisfaction with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's reparations process.

Abstracts from article:

  1. Victims expressed their concerns in a memorandum addressed to Justice Minister Penuell Maduna during a protest march in Sharpeville, Vaal Triangle. The event, organised by the Khulumani Support Group, started at Sharpeville's public library and proceeded to the local police station.

  2. Duma Khumalo, spokesperson for the group, said they wanted the government to know that they were not happy with the TRC's achievements, particularly victims' reparations, and investigations relating to people who have not been accounted for. Khumalo said the expectations of thousands of victims had not been realised: "Reparations are slow and inadequate. In some instances, people are not getting anything.

  3. "When the TRC began its work in 1996, a lot of promises were made. But what we have seen was a process which appears to grant amnesty to the perpetrators and does little for the victims," Khumalo said.

  4. The protesters pleaded with the government to ensure that, in making reparations, each case was judged according to its own circumstances. They said the proposed R23 000 a year over a six-year period for each victim was insufficient.

  5. The marchers demanded that the TRC continue with investigations after the amnesty committee ended its work, particularly in cases that involved exhumations and people who had disappeared.
