Khulumani Support Group, the national membership organisation of victims and survivors of apartheid-era gross human rights abuses in South Africa, expresses its deep concern and sadness about the humanitarian crisis in Zimbabwe that has precipitated unimaginable suffering for ordinary Zimbabweans.
We see Zimbabweans trapped in situations of deepening poverty, depair and degradation, despite their heroic and unceasing struggles against seemingly insurmountable odds. We can no longer keep silent. We call for the urgent extension of refugee status to all Zimbabweans who have fled the terror in their own land and have sought shelter and safety in South Africa.
We also condemn? the brutal repression and criminalisation of ordinary Zimbabweans, by agents of the ZANU PF regime who practise adbuction, torture and the killing of political opponents and other human rights violations, with seeming impunity. The ZANU PF regime is responsible for the violation of many regional and international treaties and conventions on human and democratic rights.
As we witness the continuing breakdown of Zimbabwe’s essential health and sanitation services and a? rising death toll due to mass starvation and spreading catastrophic disease, we call for the Memorandum of Understanding signed between ZANU PF and the two MDC factions to be fully respected as a matter or urgency so that the agreed Global Political Agreement can be implemented in earnest by the end of February 2009. We commit to making every effort possible to secure the honouring of this timeframe by politicians in Zimbabwe.
In the event of the failure of this political mechanism, we call for the creation of a Transitional Authority that can take urgent steps to stabilise Zimbabwe’s humanitarian situation and to bring its? economy under control in preparation for the writing of a new Constitution to be followed by a referendum on the proposed constitution and new elections.
We believe that the urgent implementation of this plan of action could help limit further loss of life and livelihood in Zimbabwe. It is to this end that Khulumani Support Group commits itself as an organisation whose members encounter the reality of the lives of Zimbabweans living in their communities every day. We will stand with and speak out with our partners to try to ensure that the untenable situation in Zimbabwe comes to an end as soon as possible.
