Launch of the Grahamstown East School Water Forums on International Rivers Day, 14 March 2014

March 14 is International Rivers Day. It is an International Day of Action for people to speak in the name of rivers which cannot speak for themselves, about what threatens rivers and the communities that depend on rivers.

This year Khulumani Water for Dignity will celebrate the day by launching School Water Forums in all 22 schools in Grahamstown East.

Khulumani’s surveys on the state of water and sanitation at these township schools has revealed a dismal state of affairs with some schools having no or only one working toilet on their premises, with water leaking from broken pipes and with a lack of access to hand washing stations.

Khulumani has been working with the Institute for Water Research towards developing a new paradigm in integrated water resource management in which citizens are valued as equal partners in securing water for dignity and for life into the future.

The Department of Education in Makana Municipality has welcomed this initiative and is giving it its full support.
