Cape Town reparation conference announced –

A two-day conference to be held in October 2000 and which aimed to address the “unfinished business” of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) was announced in Cape Town.

Abstracts from article:

  1. The Reparation and Memorialisation Conference will be jointly hosted by the University of Cape Town’s graduate school of humanities and the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (IJR).
  2. A IJR spokesperson said the conference was prompted by concerns about progress on reparations since the TRC hearings. “We are concerned about the promises of reparations made to victims… these victims are still waiting for a response,” he said.

  3. IJR executive director Charles Villa Vicencio said the conference came two years after the TRC’s recommendations on the issue. The TRC’s “apparent lack of political will to proceed with this matter (reparations)” would feature high on the agenda. “It is clear the concerns that emerged through the TRC process need to be put back on the national agenda,” Vicencio said.
